Like most freelance, independent, self-employed types, I don’t take regular breaks or many full days off. But given how much work I’ve been doing lately—most of it related to my recent DIY “TED Talk,” upcoming move, and new works-in-progress—I decided to take today off and focus on me, me, me.
And today just happens to be the Sabbath.
Now, I’m not exactly what you’d call a “Good Christian” who can quote scripture. I’m more a “Good Christian Bitch” who enjoys blessing hearts like all Southerners do.
Let’s just say I’m a bit rough around the spiritual edges.
A sinner by most traditional definitions.
And a few non-traditional ones, too.
But here’s the thing: even sinners need Sabbaths. Rest isn’t something you earn by being perfect. It’s something you need because we’re human.
Burnout doesn’t check your holier-than-thou credentials before it does its thing.
It just hits. And lately? It’s been hitting hard.
So today, I’m honoring the Sabbath—not with piety or perfection, but with stillness. Instead of waking up early to write this newsletter, I wrote it last night and scheduled it to land in your inbox this morning.
If all goes according to plan, I’m still asleep as you’re reading this. When I do get up, I’ll start the day with meditation and a homemade breakfast. Then, I will finally make my way back to the gym…which I’ve been avoiding for over a month.
Instead, I plan to unplug and play catch-up on naps and reading.
The world keeps turning whether we grind ourselves down or not.
That’s grace, if you ask me.
So here’s to rest, however messy or holy it looks. Here’s to remembering that even the wackiest, weariest, and wildest amongst us need to unplug every once in a while.
Because yes, sinners need Sabbaths too.
Keep calm and carry on!
