Last week, after realizing I had "found" 40+ pounds during my Rip Van Winkle years, I decided itās time to add exercise back into my routine.
While I had a stationary bike at home, letās just say I do better when I can exercise in a space dedicated to fitness, surrounded by others working on their own goals. Iām a visual person and get inspired easily, so a gym environment just works better for me.
After researching and touring a few options, I joined a new gym last week and had my first official workout first thing this morning.
I was at the gym before 5:30 a.m. and back home before 7 a.m. It was my first time back in a gym in at least five years, and Iām happy to report I actually had a good time.
But walking from the parking lot to the gym after so many years, I was more than a little nervous. Would I feel out of place? Would I remember how to use the machines? Would my body revolt against me mid-workout?
Thankfully, muscle memory is a wonderful thing, and once I got going, everything felt familiar again. I started with some light cardio to ease myself in, followed by a few strength exercises. I didnāt push too hardāIām playing the long game hereābut I left feeling energized and accomplished. A few minutes in the hydromassage chair before I left didnāt hurt eitherā¦it actually felt wonderful!
It may be my first workout, but I plan to go at least 3 times a week. Or more. My goal isnāt to obsess over numbers but to feel better, move better, and get back to where I was before depression and grief kicked my ass.
As for the pounds I "found" over the years, theyāre officially on notice:
Itās time for them to get lost.
And while I realize Iāll always be a big guyāIām 6ā4ā and built like a football playerāI do look forward to fitting into more of my old clothes and maybe even having a reason to shop for some new ones.
Wishing you and yours a fun day this Sunday!

HOLIDAYS + OBSERVANCES
PORTRAIT + QUOTE OF THE DAY
āMy mother couldn't have been happier when I said I was moving to New York.ā

Sigh, I'd like to pack ON a few pounds. I'm down to the weight I was when I got married (first time to a woman - we're still friends). That was about 145lb. My best weight is around 165 which is what I weighed at IML back in 1997. But, I'm healthy and mobile and can still climb into our big elm with my trustee Sawsall and take out the dead branches at 81. I've got no whining coming!!! I can't wait to see your live broadcast. For me 1pm is a good time. I claim the prerogative of age and hardly ever crawl out of my nice warm bed before 9 or 10 and hubby has the coffee made. The best mornings we take our cups out to the hot tub before driving or biking (we have electric bikes) to the post office which usually takes over an hour or two because you have to stop and chat with all the other folks coming and going. Ah, life in a small town!!!
Boy can I relate to extra baggage which for me occurred recently. Back in early January (this year) I fell down some concrete steps which injured the C-2, C-4 vertebrae in my neck, the L-5 and S-1 vertebrae at the tailbone, and herniated the L-4 disc which pinched a nerve and paralyzed my abdomen and bowels which precluded me from doing the number two for over five weeks. As a result of not being able to unload myself, it backed up big time and caused excessive weight gain. I am also 6'2" and normally 180# which shot up to way over 210# in a short few weeks. Little by little the spine and back is being restored to normal through extensive treatments multiple times a week, and slowly the bowels are returning to normal which means the baggage I carried for weeks now is coming off as is the extra weight and I can once again fit into my size 34" pants. My predicament wasn't due to time, but an unplanned spinal injury that got out of control real quick. I now have the ability to walk around the campground again, and it is my hope that I can lose the rest of this weight before the first official day of Spring in four days. As for going to a gym, that won't happen as I am very active with a high metabolism which makes it easy to maintain a slim frame which I've had for going on 60-years now. I really wish I could get back down to 158# but I don't ever see that happening, so I'll be content with 180# because that is what looks good on me that my mirror loves. We all know that mirrors don't lie.
