Not only has 'crisis du jour' become less and less hyperbolic in recent years, EVERY type of media seems to use increasingly emotional headlines in order to get attention. Simply scanning to see which to read has become exhausting. Over the past few years I've had to whittle down the topics I follow. I followed Ukraine until Jan this year; now I've had to drop even that. A couple reasons for that. One is that my field has joined those that don't give raises; you have to job hop to earn more income... and that sucks up time & energy. The other is that media has become increasingly more unhinged, both articles and comments. More and more often I read things like, "Chile has threatened to close off the Suez Canal unless the Austrailian Outback gets more rain". My threshold for how much of that I can tolerate just keeps dropping.
To keep my sanity I've turned off all audio, visual, & tactile alerts on my phone. I see the notifications only when I pick up my phone and unlock it. My old Blackberries allowed me to accept only calls from my contact list; I wish that were available today.
I've learned to embrace naps. They're lifesavers. I think I'll take one now.
