Overwhelmed has become a state of being for folx lately. It’s all too much. 90% of my therapy sessions with clients is helping people process the constant barrage of news and attacks on marginalized groups. Thank you so much for the reminder that we need to take a step away, recharge and refill, and make room to continue this fight and continue to show up for ourselves and our communities.
Ah, yes... The allergy-to-infection pipeline. I'm way too familiar with it.
Not only has 'crisis du jour' become less and less hyperbolic in recent years, EVERY type of media seems to use increasingly emotional headlines in order to get attention. Simply scanning to see which to read has become exhausting. Over the past few years I've had to whittle down the topics I follow. I followed Ukraine until Jan this year; now I've had to drop even that. A couple reasons for that. One is that my field has joined those that don't give raises; you have to job hop to earn more income... and that sucks up time & energy. The other is that media has become increasingly more unhinged, both articles and comments. More and more often I read things like, "Chile has threatened to close off the Suez Canal unless the Austrailian Outback gets more rain". My threshold for how much of that I can tolerate just keeps dropping.
To keep my sanity I've turned off all audio, visual, & tactile alerts on my phone. I see the notifications only when I pick up my phone and unlock it. My old Blackberries allowed me to accept only calls from my contact list; I wish that were available today.
I've learned to embrace naps. They're lifesavers. I think I'll take one now.
Jeepers Clint, thanks for the mention on that video clip. Now onto serious(?)stuff I've been in JOMO(JoyOfMissingOut) mode for a long time about the International news and media coverage, esp on YouTube. Even on our 🇫🇴🇬🇧 main Tv news I will only watch my local area TV news. It does (if I let it) scare the life out of me for all these younger folks that have this unsettling future. I don't want to meddle in your 🇺🇸 affairs BUT where's the political opposition(Republicans)to this madness as only you 🇺🇸 citizens CAN do something about this political shenanigans. Enough now before I send your BP sky high again. Regards(I'll forgo the Cheers this time) DougT 🇫🇴🇬🇧
I have strongly filtered the news since the Vietnamese War. I actively seek good news - people's loving and caring, their inclusivity, acceptance of diversity, especially from children who are non-discriminatory about sex, sexuality, gender, disability, race and so on. I know that there are bad people, bad things, but refuse to be brutalised.
Not only the news, but sometimes even my friends take my breath away. "Of the two judges, choose the principal one." That's from the Lo-Jong slogans of Atisha, an early Mahayana Buddhist teacher. Meaning, in this case, you do you, boo. All my best wishes.
Snapping, applauding, saying endless AMENs. Thanks for this rallying cry for self care, Clint. 💖💖💖
This, this, this - you are radiant! Thank you for sharing, dear friend.

Give Ireland back to the Irish
Make Ireland Irish today
Great Britain and all the people
Say that all people must be free
Meanwhile, back in Ireland
There's a man who looks like me
(Many guys in Ireland look like Paul)

Amen, lad...

Love Buddhist philosophy and teachings, Clarke. Boundaries with dears and nears too. Best wishes for peace!
Amen.
