There are LOTS of parallels between the Republican candidates for office in 1920 & 2024. Harding's White House & Cabinet were hotbeds of notorious corruption, with Congressional investigation culminating in the Teapot Dome scandal. Harding "had an eye for the ladies," as they called it prior to #MeToo. One of his mistresses wrote a book detailing how they carried on in the White House. There was talk of an illegitimate child. All of this was publicized by "opposition" newspapers -- & was the talk of the country. Things didn't look good for his re-election. To shore up his political support, he took a train tour/early campaign swing throughout California with his wife, the indomitable Florence. One night he died. Wags, ofc, wondered if Florence finally had enough -- but that was just talk.

Plus ca change; plus ca le meme chose!

I had heard bits of this, but forgot about it. I can barely what happened in last week’s “news” cycle. But thank you for the refresher. Lots of populist con men are good at sayings but terrible at leadership. Always falls to the next administration to clean up their mess. Fingers crossed…maybe Melania will join him on some last-minute campaign stops. And put a stop to him once and for all. I’m so tired of hearing his name and thinking about his ugh-ly reality.
