I can’t begin to tally up how much I've spent on self help. I help myself these days with the help of the odd library book. This was an excellent video, thank you for sharing it
The self-help industry thrives on people’s uncertainty then sells that uncertainty back to them as “motivation.” It’s not wisdom, it’s dependency disguised as growth. The truth is, sustainable change rarely comes from a script or someone else’s morning routine. It comes from facing the messy, uncomfortable stuff that can’t be branded or monetized.
I like your distinction between a guru and a guide. Gurus promise certainty; guides create space for self-trust. That difference is everything.

Thanks Clint and Bob Ross. 🎨🖌🖼 Brihaspati, represents the planet Jupiter in Vedic astrology. is revered as the "Guru" or "Divine Mentor," embodying wisdom, knowledge, and guidance. For once Clint I have no views on the subject.....honestly BUT the university of Hard Knocks soon sorts.......(add your own metaphor here) Cheers DougT 🇫🇴 🇬🇧
Thanks for the recommendation, Clint! And you really nailed it with this article- I was also someone who looked for answers in self-help books and such. For me, it took blowing up my life and starting over (the whole “Messy Reinvention” vibe) to find what I needed.
Again, you hit the proverbial nail on the head (and perhaps a few other heads, I'll let you decide.)
"I don’t want to read the work of a guru. I want to read the work of a fellow traveler, someone who doesn’t pretend to have it all figured out but is willing to share what they’ve learned along the way: fumbles, stumbles, and all.
There’s a big difference between someone who’s learning with you and someone who’s preaching at you. One shares their truth; the other sells a template.
In my book, real growth isn’t about following or worshipping someone else’s wisdom. It’s about finding and trusting your own."
Thanks, Michael. I so wish I had learned these lessons without all the time, money, and energy wasted on gurus. I remember realizing how big the “self-help” section at my local bookstores were getting. Live and learn…to live another day!
