Thanks Clint and Voltaire, whose Candide became an opera by Leonard Bernstein.(Glitter and Be Gay)πππ Jonathan Larson's Rent was quite an accomplishment, actually improving on Puccini IMO, by combining Mimi and Muzetta into one role. Muzetta's Waltz becomes Out Tonight, and Mimi lives. In the opera, Muzetta's Waltz (Quando me'n vo) is the high point for me, when Marcello sings the refrain, indicating that he still loves her in spite of everything, and they all live happily for less than an hour, when Mimi dies. πππ Since Muzetta is a secondary role, most of the great sopranos have never sung it.
Love me some Candide, Steve! As for La BohΓ¨me, Iβve never seen it, so thank you for clarifying some of the updates Mr. Larson made. The musical still fills me with so much nostalgia. I think itβs the first musical I fell in love with, warts and all. Cheers!
I saw the stage production of RENT in San Francisco at the Golden Gate Theatre in 1999. Iβve always loved musicals, but I had very little experience with Broadway productions. I was completely blown away. Iβd never experienced anything like it, and just like you, I was bawling.
Same here, David. I first saw it onstage in Dallas. It was the βBennyβ cast. Iβm sure SF got the βAngelβ cast, which I heard was even better!
