In just over 24 hours, Iāll be arriving at Seattleās Pier 91, handing over my bags, and stepping into full getaway mode. My destination: Alaska and British Columbia. My vessel: Holland Americaās MS Noordam. My vibe: somewhere between wide-eyed wonder and ādid I pack enough underwear?ā
Iām ready. Mentally, physically, and spiritually. Iāve been ready for weeks.
My bags, though, are another story. Theyāre currently camped out in Miss Mās guest bedroom, bursting at the seams and having a full-on identity crisis. Not sure if Iām going for layered lumberjack, business casual daddy, or shorts-and-a-tee simplicity.
Packing for a cruise like this isnāt just packing. Itās strategy. Itās storytelling. Itās me trying to anticipate every version of myself I might need over the next eight nights.
Thereās outdoorsy me, chill-on-deck me, hot tub me, dressed-up-for-dinner me, and the version of me who swears Iāll wake up for sunrise and hit the gym. Even though I am more of a breakfast buffet kind of guy.
Right now, all of those versions are competing for suitcase real estate.
Thankfully, Iāve got a secret weapon. My sister-from-another-mister has not only let me take over her guest room, sheās also graciously letting me leave anything I donāt need on the cruise at her place. Including my car.
I brought way too much stuff to take on the cruise. So itās time to edit and edit again. As writers rewrite, travelers repack.
During round two of packing, Iāll realize I donāt need six hoodies and can survive with far fewer ājust in caseā items. Iāll probably cut at least half of whatās in there now.
Thereās something kind of perfect about this moment. The almost-there energy. The anticipation humming just under the surface.
Tomorrow afternoon, Iāll be watching the Seattle skyline shrink behind me. Trading traffic noise for ocean waves. Swapping daily routines for itineraries looser, lighter, and a little more unknown.
But first, Iāve got to conquer my luggage. If youāve ever stood over an open bag questioning your entire identity, you know my predicament.
Next stop: Disembarkation Day.
Keep calm and letās cruise, yāall!

P.S. If youāre curious about the cruise, Iāll definitely be sharing plenty of photos and videos once Iām onboard. Iāve been a little quiet this week, soaking up quality time with Miss M and her not-so-little dawg Simon, The Pitiful Pitty. Oh, how I love them!

Clint, That many hoodies, really? And underwear advice: commando, reverse wear, sink rinse outs. Have fun. I really am excited to share the cruise with you. Wonder if you will be able to get invited to visit the gay employee parties and/or bar? Fondly, Michael
Packing and planning my clothing needs has never been big to my mind. It has nearly always been a last minute (actual last 30 minute) thing. I've only been on one cruise (around the Med for 4 or 5 days). No dining with the captain. Sharing a cabin with a stranger (I can't remember him so he didn't cause me any hassle). I don't envy your cruise - too many people impacting on my psyche.
Enjoy!!
