Right? Im far from religious but the dedication and sacrifice he went through (starving himself for months) to create the series adds even more impact for me. 🌈✌️
I am not an art historian, either. Has similarities with von Gloeden; maybe more homo-romantic in his compositions, though. Soft focus seems more gentle and tender, like a caress to his models.
I’m far from an art historian, but I wonder if Day and Gloeden knew of each others’ work. I know I take the internet for granted, but the distance between Sicily and Boston was HUGE circa 1900. Day strikes me as a more gentle photographer than the “Baron.”
Agreed. Kind, loving and poetic. Pure speculation and imagination - Day was interested in North Africa culture. If he visited Algeria, he wouldn't have been far from Sicily.
I’m sure Steichen was inspired by someone. Rembrandt seems logical to me. Years ago, I overheard a museum docent describe Rembrandt as “the inventor of the selfie.” Still makes me laugh.
Clint, a tad too high art for me. Dates of some of those studies must have been at the end of his artistic working life as some were so modern looking and fresh. For myself I do appreciate the pre Raphaelite movement looks, so not a complete philistine 🧐😎
BTW I did Google Gus Kenworthy, strange he was never on my radar before. Perhaps it was because he was a winter sports Olympian and not a summer diver/swimmer in his Speedo's that he never came on my radar, I'm so shallow 😮😎 Cheers DougT 🇫🇴
OMG “The Seven Last Words”. Stunning

The last photo of Day in this series looks VERY like one of Rembrant's self-portraits. I'm sure that's not an accident.

Hahaha…no worries about Day or Kenworthy. We like what we like. I’m a fan of mixing the high-brow and the low-brow, as you know. Cheers! 🌈✌️
