I'm kicking off my morning by celebrating a milestoneā1,000 subscribers to this newsletter!
A huge THANK YOU to everyone who's subscribed and supported my work over the past few months, especially here on Substack.
As Dorothy Gale once said, āThereās no place like home.ā And, for me, Substack has become just thatāan online āhomeā where adults (mostly) mind their Ps and Qs.
Contrary to popular belief, manners matterāat least to me.
Last night, I received two comments, an hour apart, on the same video:
One commenter, āKan,ā seemed determined to find something to be mad about. If it hadnāt been the CONTEMPORARY photos of Asian men, it would have been VINTAGE photos of another group he felt the need to defend.
You canāt āwinā with keyboard warriors like āKan.ā Oh. Well. I wonāt even try.
While I value diversity and inclusion, I have no patience for strangers on the internet who are disrespectful and/or question my integrity.
"Kan" must think very highly of his opinionsāthat makes one of us.
People like āKanā donāt know me, and I donāt tolerate this kind of behavior from people I do know. Why would I allow it from someone I donāt?
Long story short: Zuck āKan.ā He and his comment were removed. Sorry, not sorry.
Just as quickly as āKanā irritated me, a warm and thoughtful comment from āMrKimā brought me right back to center. Knowing my work touched someone so deeply also helped me sleep better than I have in weeks. Thanks, āMrKim.ā
While I see my montages as artistic and creative, I donāt label them as āhighā art or ālowā art. Theyāre simply my art. Created and curated by and for me. Shared in the hope of bringing a bit of joy to someone elseās day.
Whether people like my work or not is none of my business. If they choose to tell me, itās my choice whether or not to listen.
Luckily, āKanā and his unkind kin are in the (oh-so-vocal) minority.
Thankfully, āMrKimā is more representative of the comments I typically receive.
I love hearing from those who connect with my work.
I loathe hearing from those who want to bully or harass.
While none of us are perfect, we can all strive to be kinder and more respectful.
Imagine how much better and happier the world would be if we all could focus more on what we love and less on what we hate.
Thank you for kindly reading and subscribing!

Mr. Kan's bizarre comment made me think he had had a cactus for breakfast.
Many thanks for your mesmerizing website.
One thing that makes me uncomfortable is seeing so many men in the vintage photos smoking cigarettes. I wonder how many lives were shortened by that.
Such a nice note to celebrate on. Thanks & congratulations!
