If you’re US-based, Happy Independence Day.
Given the state of our country, I truly hope it won’t be our last.
That said, this Fourth Of July started for me at about 3:30am with literal fireworks going off in my neighborhood. One sounded like a mortar exploding directly over my place. It lit up my bedroom like a nuclear bomb. Joy.
Not able to get back to sleep, I decided to get up and follow up on a pesky copyright claim by a pesky Content ID abuser that popped back up (without notice) on one of our YouTube videos.
Bad idea. Fireworks were fired…by me at YouTube’s Creator Support Chat bots. I mean “team” of bots and (maybe?) humans. I’m not sure what they are besides chatty. Because they definitely aren’t supportive…unless you enjoy talking in circles.
Long story short (but full, un-edited chat below for those who want to see Clint in his un-finest hour), I shouldn’t have bothered because now my blood pressure is up and my tummy is upset.
Well, all of me is upset. At myself and YouTube.
And I’m mostly upset at Naxos Music Library, a for-profit “library” that thinks it owns most classical music. Especially works in the Public Domain.
I have very strong feelings anyone and any organization that claims copyright on works that clearly belong to all of us. Very strong because they are very wrong.
Over the past three months, I’ve received at least a dozen copyright claims from this “library” alone. All for music composed before 1920. They may own copyrights on newer recordings of those compositions…but they don’t own copyrights on the original composition. No one does. That’s what public domain means, dumbasses.
I’m fighting this out of principle. These assholes are infringing on my rights and inconveniencing me, so I’m returning the favor by publicizing their bullshit and calling for YouTube to enforce its own policies.
Also, YouTube’s guilty-until-proven-innocent approach to content creators is rude.
While there will be more literal fireworks today, I’m hopeful that after documenting the earlier internal fireworks show, I’ve exhausted my supply of ammo.
Feel free to “replay crew” the copyright claim saga below (complete with typos and ANGRY language) if you need a giggle. Or need to understand why content creators are so frustrated by the overzealous Content ID system and the rampant abuse of YouTube’s copyright claim process.
Off to find some independence in this day…and hopefully some freedom to create too.
Thanks for reading!
Clint
P.S. There will be naps. 🇺🇸😴

Not proud to fight with support bots, but their repetitive automated responses and inability to understand a basic problem infuriate me. How is this helpful? Ultimately, it’s an hour of my life I’ll never get back…so forgive the ALL CAPS and abusive approach (after trying to be nice doesn’t work).
Also fuck Naxos Music Library and it’s “librarians” for causing this problem.
Sorry, not sorry.

5:23:08 AM Collide Press: Collide Press joined the conversation
5:23:11 AM Chris: Hi my name is Chris, how are you doing today?
5:23:29 AM Collide Press: Hi Chris. Doing alright. If you're US-based, Happy Fourth of July.
5:24:07 AM Chris: That's good to hear. Happy Fourth of July to you too!
5:25:17 AM Collide Press: This is a claim that was ruled invalid by YouTube back on April 28th so not sure why it's popped up again. I've disputed (again) but got no notifications...also, once it's ruled invalid why would it pop up again
5:25:55 AM Chris: Thanks for sharing your concern.
5:25:59 AM Collide Press: From the original YT email: "For the claims that were submitted to these videos: LH3dCD-ge4A, B1TzS3MO4a0, 0TsILnen1hg, and p_YnLLdpHgA. Thank you for your submission. After careful review we have determined the claims to be invalid. Hence, the reported copyright claims were removed."
5:26:55 AM Chris: I understand that you are concerned about the copyright claim you have received.
5:26:58 AM Chris: I know how important it is for you to have this issue sorted out. No worries, I got you and I'm more than willing to check this out for you.
5:27:04 AM Chris: To help you better with this concern, I'll go ahead and check this matter further on my end. Is it okay if I place this chat on hold for 3-5 minutes while I look into this?
5:27:09 AM Collide Press: Concern and frustration. Naxos is a repeat abuser of Content ID. My channel has had numerous claims filed by them, all illigitimate. Please ask Content ID to revoke their access...or at least enforce the rules.
5:27:20 AM Collide Press: Of course.
5:27:36 AM Chris: Thanks. Please stay connected.
5:32:42 AM Chris: Thanks for patiently waiting.
5:32:52 AM Collide Press: Sure thing
5:33:01 AM Chris: I took the liberty checking on the video you provided.
5:33:48 AM Chris: As per checking here, the video doesn´t have copyright.
5:33:55 AM Chris: When I checked your channel.
5:34:10 AM Collide Press: It has a copyright claim.
5:35:04 AM Collide Press: It's not monetizable. What aren't you understanding?
5:35:08 AM Chris: I found that your content was removed due to a violation of our community guidelines.
5:35:20 AM Chris: Copyright claims and Community Guidelines strikes are different.
5:35:24 AM Collide Press: Chris. You're not on the right video.
5:35:40 AM Collide Press: No...please stick to the topic at hand.

5:36:00 AM Chris: That is the video I checked.
5:36:16 AM Chris: You can go to your YouTube studio.
5:36:25 AM Chris: And go to the dashboard.
5:36:40 AM Collide Press: There is no community guidelines issue with this vifeo.
5:36:42 AM Chris: You will see you have active Community Guidelines strikes.
5:36:47 AM Collide Press: You're glitchy, Chris.
5:36:54 AM Chris: Not on the video.
5:37:00 AM Chris: I am referring to the channel.
5:37:15 AM Chris: The video in question has no copyright.
5:37:17 AM Collide Press: I have A srike, not related to this video. Please stay on the subject I'm referring to.
5:37:34 AM Collide Press: Then why is it not monetizable?
5:37:37 AM Chris: Can you send me video clip where you see copyright on that video?
5:37:58 AM Collide Press: Screen Shot 2024-07-04 at 5.37.36 AM.png
5:38:11 AM Collide Press: Here's a screenshot of the copyright page.
5:38:17 AM Chris: Base on the video you sent to me.
5:38:18 AM Chris: Copyright-protected content found. The copyright owner is reviewing your dispute. Revenue is held separately until the dispute is resolved.
5:38:24 AM Chris: Still under review.
5:38:40 AM Chris: That is why it is not monetizing.
5:39:05 AM Collide Press: Chris, you're bot is glitchy. THIS ISSUE WAS ALREADY DISPUTED AND YOUTUBE FOUND IT TO BE INVALID. ON APRIL 28th. WHY IS IT NOW BACK TO COPYRIGHT CLAIM?
5:39:16 AM Chris: Dispute expires in 30 days if the claimant not responding.
5:39:39 AM Collide Press: I'm well aware. Already been through this process. Please read.
5:40:00 AM Collide Press: You're automated responses are unhelpful and insulting.
5:40:00 AM Chris: Copyright-protected content found. The copyright owner is reviewing your dispute. Revenue is held separately until the dispute is resolved.
5:40:23 AM Chris: I understand your point that you want this video to be monetize.
5:40:26 AM Collide Press: I hate bots. This chat system is way too stupid for words.
5:40:53 AM Chris: I am on your side.
5:40:55 AM Collide Press: But do you understand YOUTUBE'S ALREADY RULED IT'S AN INVALID CLAIM? "Chris"?@
5:41:00 AM Chris: I am human.
5:41:02 AM Chris: I am not a bot.
5:41:11 AM Chris: Still under review by the claimant.
5:41:18 AM Collide Press: You aren't. And if you are, you have reading comprehension issues.
5:41:37 AM Chris: If the claimant will not respond to the dispute, it will expire in 30 days.
5:41:47 AM Chris: I am sorry if you feel that way.
5:41:47 AM Collide Press: Still not addressing the issue: It was already reviewed and dismissed. By YouTube. On April 28th.
5:42:20 AM Collide Press: Chris, you are truly one of the least helpful bots I've ever experienced and hope your gliches are addressed.
5:42:20 AM Chris: Can you send me the screenshots of that message you receive?
5:42:34 AM Chris: To avoid confusion.
5:42:47 AM Collide Press: Screen Shot 2024-07-04 at 5.42.27 AM.png
5:42:53 AM Collide Press: Well past confusion.
5:43:17 AM Collide Press: You need to read before replying...and still to the topic at hand.
5:43:23 AM Collide Press: Stick
5:43:29 AM Chris: I am sorry if you feel that way.
5:43:39 AM Collide Press: I am sorry bots are dumb
5:44:01 AM Chris: I am not a bot.
5:44:02 AM Chris: I am human.
5:44:30 AM Collide Press: Okay, whatever automated message makes you feel better. Screenshot of the email sent.
5:45:07 AM Chris: The screenshot you sent to me, you can reply to that email. Since this case already handled by the previous rep. already.
5:45:54 AM Chris: I already explain what we checked on your channel.
5:46:00 AM Collide Press: Really? That's how this bs works? Fine. You've started my day with much frustration. I hope your day is equally as fun.
5:46:13 AM Chris: I am sorry if you feel that way.
5:46:30 AM Collide Press: I already explained why I contacted you and now we can end this chat.
5:46:38 AM Chris: Here is a recap of the resolution provided earlier copyright strike. I understand your frustration, but please know that we have thoroughly investigated your request and there is nothing more I can add.
5:46:50 AM Collide Press: Thanks for making my blood pressure rise.
5:47:08 AM Chris: I am sorry if you feel that way.
5:47:13 AM Chris: I understand, let me transfer your concern to my supervisor, they will get back to you here on chat shortly
5:47:13 AM Collide Press: You can't do basic math or reading comprehension. Bye
5:47:29 AM Collide Press: Your supervisor? This should be rich.
5:47:41 AM Chris: Please stay connected.
5:47:54 AM Collide Press: Oh, I will.
5:50:11 AM Chris: Chris added participant(s): Neesa
5:50:12 AM Neesa: Neesa joined the conversation
5:50:27 AM Neesa: Hi, this is Neesa, one of the managers from the YouTube Support Experience team. With my years of experience with YouTube, I'm confident in trying to assist you with your concern. I know how anxious you are to get this issue resolved and I'm sorry for the experience you've had with our team so far. Let me check your interaction, kindly give me a few moments.
5:50:29 AM Chris: Chris left the conversation
5:51:59 AM Collide Press: Thanks, Neesa. "Chris" seems incapable understanding. These automated responses are quite frustrating also.
5:52:47 AM Neesa: I apologize. Please give me few minutes to review your interaction with Chris.
5:52:54 AM Collide Press: We can start fresh if you prefer.
5:52:55 AM Collide Press: Ok
5:57:09 AM Neesa: Thank you for waiting.
5:57:23 AM Collide Press: Sure.
5:59:24 AM Neesa: I have carefully checked your interaction with Chris and it shows here that the video you mentioned got Copyrighted.
5:59:35 AM Neesa: I need more time to check on what happened on the video.
6:00:28 AM Collide Press: Hopefully you understand it's a video that was previously copyright claimed for the same piece and ruled by your own teams as invalid. On April 28. Why is it back? And why is it so hard to understand?
6:01:00 AM Neesa: I see here that Chris already mentioned that Copyright Claims and and Community Guidelines Strikes are different policies.
6:01:16 AM Collide Press: Community strikes have nothing to do with this chat, yet Chris seemed determined to make it about that. I resent that and am beyond frustrated with YouTube's lack of relevant support.
6:01:55 AM Collide Press: Yes. And only Chris brought up Community Guidelines. Not I. Please stay on track or I will continue to think you're a bot too.
6:02:04 AM Neesa: I understand all your details.
6:02:10 AM Neesa: Please allow me to check.
6:02:15 AM Collide Press: Thanks
6:02:39 AM Collide Press: If it's not clear, Chris has given me lots of reasons not to trust this chat "feature."
6:07:38 AM Neesa: Thank you for waiting.
6:08:01 AM Collide Press:
6:08:17 AM Neesa: I do apologize for inconvenience regarding to your previous interaction with Chris.
6:08:35 AM Collide Press: Fix their glitch please.
6:08:41 AM Neesa: I have carefully check the video and it shows that the video has Copyright claim.
6:09:09 AM Neesa: Keep in mind that a Content ID claim is automatically generated when an uploaded video matches another video (or segment of a video) in YouTube's Content ID system.
6:09:17 AM Collide Press: Yes. Which is THE SAME COPYRIGHT CLAIM THAT WAS RULED INVALID ON APRIL 28...BY YOUTUBE. What is complicated about this?
6:09:57 AM Neesa: I see. I understand that.
6:10:07 AM Collide Press: If it was ruled invalid, why is the reference still in the system? Frankly, why is Naxos? They abuse the system seemingly without any recourse.
6:10:34 AM Collide Press: You do, huh? Then why are we repeating the same things.
6:11:00 AM Neesa: I do understand your frustrations.
6:11:36 AM Collide Press: I don't understand your lack of comprehension...unless you're a bot. Then that explains so much of YouTube's lack of creator support.
6:12:23 AM Collide Press: My frustration is WHY IS THE SAME CLAIM BACK? Also, why is that hard to understand?
6:13:59 AM Collide Press: Not that any human (and YouTube) will read it, but I'll be sending some feedback about this and other instances of ridiculous "support" chats.
6:14:56 AM Neesa: I do apologize for the inconvenience earlier.
6:16:12 AM Neesa: I know that you are confused why the same video got claimed. But it shows here the system matches another music on your channel.
6:17:13 AM Neesa: I have checked that you recently disputed the video. The claimant has 7 days from when you dispute the claim to review the dispute.
6:17:26 AM Neesa: Keep in mind that YouTube doesn’t mediate copyright disputes.
6:17:30 AM Collide Press: It's all Beethoven music, composed in the 1700s. I don't know why this is even an issue. It's ridiculous. I'm using public domain recordings of a public domain work.
6:18:50 AM Collide Press: Keep in mind YouTube allows repeat abusers of their Content ID system to continue abusing and punishes creators who are doing their due dilligence. Our reward? Chatting with unhelpful support folks.
6:18:50 AM Neesa: Just to let you know, the rights holders for content available for use in video may have territorial policies that could affect the availability of your video.
6:19:08 AM Neesa: Hence, the videos you're seeing that are still available under that audio may be from territories that have permission to use it.
6:19:20 AM Collide Press: THEY DO NOT OWN THE RIGHT TO THIS CONTENT. IT IS PUBLIC DOMAIN. PERIOD. I DON'T GIVE A FUCK WHAT THEY CLAIM. NOT WHAT YOUTUBE BELIEVES.
6:19:49 AM Neesa: If you think it was a mistake you have to wait for 7 days to review your dispute.
6:19:55 AM Collide Press: THEY DO NOT OWN MUSIC COMPOSED IN THE 1700s. THEY OWN A RECORDING. BUT NOT ONE I'M USING.
6:20:14 AM Collide Press: Per YouTube’s guidelines, public domain compositions are not eligible: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2605065
“The following examples are ineligible for use in or as a reference:
* Content licensed non-exclusively from a third party
* Content released under Creative Commons or similar free of charge/open licenses
* Public domain footage, recordings, or compositions
* Clips from other sources used under fair use principles
* Video gameplay footage (by other than the game’s publisher)
“YouTube takes action to address cases of abuse and error in the Content ID system. This includes disabling specific reference files or segments of reference files and releasing all associated claims, requiring manual review for certain categories of references, disabling Content ID, or even terminating YouTube partnership.”
6:20:30 AM Collide Press: REPLYING TO THE ORIGINAL EMAIL SINCE YOU ARE NOT HELPFUL
6:20:41 AM Collide Press: PLEASE DISCONNECT AND I WILL SAVE THIS CHAT
6:21:30 AM Neesa: if you're confident you have all the necessary rights to use the claimed content you have to wait for the dispute.
6:22:41 AM Neesa: I already provided all the information that you must do to fix the issue on your Copyright claim.
6:22:54 AM Collide Press: I'm confident YouTube support is pretty useless
6:23:21 AM Collide Press: I already did that and you've added nothing to my day but continued frustration. Good day.
6:23:37 AM Collide Press: STOP THINKING CREATORS ARE STUPID, YOUTUBE
6:24:09 AM Neesa: You can check our Help Center to know the details on diputing content ID claim: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2797454?hl=en&ref_topic=9282678&sjid=16008179991623153141-AP
6:24:28 AM Collide Press: Blah blah blah...bot bot bot
6:24:39 AM Collide Press: End the.chat. I want the transcript
6:24:44 AM Neesa: I do apologize for how you feel but we do not have a way to do that.
6:24:53 AM Collide Press: You're useless.
6:25:06 AM Collide Press: I feel abused so I'm returning the favor.
6:26:13 AM Neesa: I am sorry to feel that way.
6:26:50 AM Neesa: Let me know if you have other questions.
6:26:51 AM Collide Press: What part of end the chat don't you understand, Neesa?
6:27:00 AM Collide Press: Nothing you can help with.
6:27:06 AM Collide Press: End it.
6:27:12 AM Collide Press: Bye girl bye
6:27:31 AM Neesa: Alright. If you have any other questions I will be closing this chat. Thank you so much for contacting YouTube. Bye for now.
