Since the storm that’s been wreaking havoc across California continues on outside my studio window, I’m attempting to turn the unending cascade of raindrops outside into an opportunity to focus on the good and the inspiring. Mother Nature is causing much destruction and disruption across the West Coast, so we’re all doing our best to keep it moving forward and to keep, keep it together.
While the atmospheric river is definitely dampening my spirits, me and the Collide Press Crew are trying to avoid that dreaded phenomenon known as seasonal depression. We try to remember that within every gloomy cloud, there is the possibility of a rainbow and silver lining too.
If only there were some leprechauns with pots of gold too.
Cuz we love gingers. And gold and the golden rule too.
WEATHER WARNING = SEASONAL DEPRESSION
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), aka seasonal depression, often intensifies during the darker, colder months. Rainy days, with their persistent gray skies and rhythmic drumming on rooftops, can exacerbate these feelings of melancholy and lethargy.
As the sun takes a hiatus, so too does our motivation, leaving us yearning for the warmth, light, and energy it provides.
“The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.”
Dolly Parton
We know it's crucial to acknowledge and address these emotions rather than succumb to them entirely. (Hence this special-edition post.)
Understanding the impact of weather on mental health allows us to develop coping mechanisms and find solace in the storm. Whether it's through the calming sound of rain, cozying up with a good book, or indulging in comfort foods, embracing the season becomes an essential part of navigating the emotional turbulence.
RAIN NOW = BLOOMS LATER
Surprisingly, rainy days can also reenergize our creative spirits. The soft pitter-patter on the windows and the gray ambiance provide a unique backdrop for introspection and imaginative exploration.
Many artists, writers, and creators throughout history have found inspiration in the melancholic beauty of rain-soaked landscapes, using the atmospheric conditions as a muse for their work.
"Where does the rainbow end, in your soul or on the horizon?"
Pablo Neruda
The rhythmic nature of raindrops can serve as a meditative soundtrack, helping to clear the mental fog that often accompanies seasonal depression. This clarity becomes a gateway to unexplored ideas and innovative thinking.
The unpredictable weather outside can also be a mirror to the unpredictability of creative processes. That awareness can inspire more authenticity and creativity.
CREATIVITY BOOSTERS = DOWNPOUR DISTRACTIONS
Making It Work Indoors
Rainy days provide the perfect excuse to huddle indoors with a blank canvas, a notebook, or a musical instrument. Unleash your creativity by engaging in activities that allow you to express yourself freely.Brave The Great Outdoors
If it’s safe enough, consider taking stepping outside and maybe even taking a stroll in the rain, armed with a waterproof camera, sketchbook, or smartphone. Capture the moody atmosphere, the glistening droplets on leaves, and the reflections on wet surfaces. Use these snapshots as inspiration.Getting Comfy & Cozy
Build a snug and inspiring environment within your home. Soft lighting, comfortable seating, and calming colors can enhance your creativity and make rainy days a welcomed opportunity for artistic exploration.Color Outside The Gray Lines
If you work digital, consider going analog or switching devices. The weather might inspire you to experiment with new artistic mediums. Whether it's watercolor painting or writing poetry inspired by the weather, embrace the chance to diversify your creative toolkit.
As we navigate the stormy weather and emotional waves it brings, we find it helpful to keep ourselves focused and moving forward.
Finding a balance between acknowledging the challenges and embracing the unexpected opportunities for creativity is not a one-size-fits-all journey.
Rainy days may make me/us hazy and lazy.
They make make you ready for the world.
Whatever the case, in the eye of the storm, there will be some calm and some silver linings of inspiration waiting to be discovered.
While the raindrops fall on our rooftops (and hopefully don’t flood your hood), let them help you find your rhythm. May your creativity dance in a downpour of ideas.
Thanks for reading!
