Even though I have a guest bedroom I call my "studio," for the past two years, I’ve done most of my work from the comfort of my kitchen table.
Before that, during the pandemic, I worked from a desk in my spacious living room.
Why don’t I just use the studio? Well, it’s in the back of the house, where the lighting isn’t ideal, and the temperature fluctuates wildly. It can feel isolating, often too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. However, it does have its perks—it’s perfect for spreading out big projects and embracing creative chaos. That’s what the closed door is for. Nobody needs to go in there but me.
But as a digital-first creative, my main desk needs are fairly minimal: a computer, a monitor (or two), and a mouse. What’s most important to me is having good lighting and reliable climate control. That’s why I find myself naturally gravitating to other spaces in my home where I feel more comfortable and connected.
Now, I’m embracing a new approach—multiple creative spaces tailored to different needs. My kitchen table remains my favorite place for paying bills, planning, researching, and scanning photos. The studio is the best space for hands-on, messy projects. The living room, with its open feel, works well for video editing and writing. And if I need to get out of the house, my laptop and I can “escape” to the bistro table on my patio.
Rather than forcing myself into a single designated workspace, I’m allowing my work to flow where it feels most natural. My creativity loves variety, and having more than one workspace helps keep things fresh and inspired.
With my new chapter of life, I’m spending today reworking my new studio places and spaces to create and curate.
This Studio Saturday, I’m so excited…and I just can’t hide it!
