It might seem odd for an avowed agnostic to write about prayer. But here we are.
While I don’t subscribe to a specific doctrine or deity, I definitely do consider myself spiritual. I believe in creativity and positivity. I believe in gratitude and intention. I believe that what we nurture tends to grow. And I believe in pausing long enough to remember none of us are the center of the universe.
That, to me, is prayer.
Not reciting memorized lines. Not bargaining with the sky. Not keeping a ledger of sins and salvation. Just a quiet moment of humility and hope.
When I say a little prayer, it’s less “Dear God” and more “Let me do better.” Let me be kinder. Let me be more patient when I’m feeling petty. Let me respond instead of react. Let me remember that everyone I meet is carrying something I cannot see.
Prayer, for me, is less about asking for things and more about aligning with my better self.
Some days prayer is simply gratitude. Thank you for this body that still gets me out of bed, even if it does not always move with ease. Thank you for work that challenges me, even when it overwhelms me. Thank you for the people who love me, especially on the days I find it hard to love myself.
Other days prayer is surrender. Take this anxiety. Take this resentment. Take this thought I cannot seem to quiet. I let it go because holding it is hard and heavy.
Call it the Universe. Call it Energy. Call it God. For me, the label matters far less than the intention behind it and the actions that flow from it. What matters is the softening. The opening. The willingness to pause before I speak or move.
Prayer is that shift. Choosing guidance over impulse. Grace over ego. Curiosity over certainty. Compassion over outrage. It is believing there is a calmer, braver, more generous version of me and then acting that version into existence.
It’s not about changing the world outside me. It’s about tending the world within me.
And when my inner landscape shifts, even slightly, my outer one often follows.
So yes, I say a little prayer. For me. And for you too, boo.
For all of us fumbling toward a better way of being.
Not because I have all the answers, but because I believe intention shapes attention, and attention shapes who we become. Sometimes the simple act of pausing to hope for better is the first step toward living a happier, healthier life.
Keep calm and pray on!

MAN CRUSH OF THE DAY
“I do respect people’s faith, but I don’t respect their manipulation of that faith in order to create fear and control.”
Javier Bardem

I think that quote from Javier Bardem sums up my thoughts on the subject. Other than that there is only once we will find out the answer......and the way things are teetering....that could be sooner than later. Love and peace to all. DougT 🏴🇬🇧
