I came out at 23; I saw Torch Song Trilogy at 41. I was deeply moved by it but it had very little impact on my 18 years experience as an out gay man. I had and still have little knowledge of US entertainment. I know of Sandra but I cannot think of any of her work that I might have seen or heard. I am grateful for the bravery and struggle of all my queer brothers and sisters.
Sandra’s work isn’t as “accessible” as Harvey’s, but I love it so. Have seen her a handful of times live and it’s always a good time. For me anyway. Cheers, Ray!
Thanks for shining the love lamp on these icons, Clint! I was deeply closeted in the 80's, yet definitely noticing how drawn I felt to openly out celebs. I watched Madonna and Sandra's "friendship" with particular interest (lol). Also? That rainbow cupcake pic = sparks of joy. Thanks for the kind mention of Bob's Job, too. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Thanks Clint, Harvey and Sandra. Lately I've been wondering about what conversations people had about me behind my back when I was a kid. I didn't think much about that until now. In the 8th grade, when I was getting bonerific, my mother started buying me thicker pants. My father talked to me about it a little bit. Back then, some men wore thinner pants and you could see everything.
Oh, I can only imagine the conversations. I know my mom “knew” (and my dad didn’t care) that I was gay early on. But she swore she didn’t have a clue till I came out in my 20s. The lady doth protest too much. Or did. Bless her heart. :-p
The title of this post cracked me up and triggered a memory: I used to tell my mother, rest in peace, that she turned me gay because when I was a little kid, she used to take me to the hairdressers' with her.😆
Let's also rejoice that on Sunday's Tony Awards ceremony (y'know, gay Superbowl), Mr. F. will receive the Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre Award, after having won four competitive Tonys throughout his career. By the way, this is the first sentence of your post: "I was today years old..." Care to be more specific, Clint? Smile, dear heart.

Showing my age but Paul Lynd, and Lilly Tomlin were my gateway celebrities 🥴
Love love love both of them. They were definitely part of my childhood too, but didn’t realize why I liked them until much later. Cheers, Dane!
