From "I Could Do That!" To "Do You, Boo!"
At least once a week, someone sends a messageāsometimes via email, sometimes direct message, something in the commentsāthat boils down to the same pointless, tired sentiment: āAnybody could do what you do.ā
I rarely bother to reply.
Giving negative ninnies attention isn't my idea of fun or creative fulfillment. But if I were to reply, itād be something along the lines of: āBut you donāt, do ya, Blanche?!ā
Seriouslyāthereās nothing worse than a bitter, blocked creative in my book. I truly wish everyone would go make stuff instead of wasting so much time and energy bitching and moaning on the internet. If you coulda, then you shouldaā¦.
The truth is, of course, anybody can create and curate to our heartās content these days. For me, thatās one of the most wonderful things about living in the 21st century.
Most of us have the talent, time, and tools to make so much more than weāve ever been able to before. Most of us can build our virtual empires with a mobile phone and a Wi-Fi connection. If we have enough conviction and courage.
What the āI could do thatā crowd misses is that doing it is the point. Not thinking about doing it. Not criticizing and scoffing at others who are doing it.

The point is to roll up our sleeves and get to work. Again. And again. And again.
Even when no oneās watching. Especially when no oneās watching.
What I doāwhat we do, those of us who make and share and risk putting our taste and time on the lineāisnāt some secret club of genius. It's not about being ābetterā than anyone. Itās about choosing to do the thing instead of standing on the sidelines. Itās about curating joy, shaping narratives, holding space for overlooked beauty, and sometimes just making something weird and wonderful because we can.
So, yes, you could do what I do.
And if that voice inside is nudging you?
Then pleaseā¦do you, boo!

DO THINGS BECAUSE YOU ENJOY DOING THEM AND OTHERS ENJOY THEM. The anonymity of the internet seems to make people think that they can be nasty without any penalty or recourse. They write things that they would be hesitant to say face to face. Maybe they envy our manifest spirituality.
