Yesterday, as part of our birthday festivities, my best friend Drew and I caught the new Superman movie at a beautifully restored Art Deco theater in Uptown Whittier.
Just stepping into that space felt like entering another era—velvet seats, vintage popcorn machines, golden accents—it was a whole vibe. The kind of place where movies feel a little more magical.
In the opening scene, Superman is beat up and bleeding. He’s down, not out, but definitely in need of a break. With some “yellow sun” therapy, Clark Kent bounces back quickly and is soon soaring through the skies again, fighting good fights for truth, justice, and the original American Way.
Cut to this morning: I woke up feeling… well, like Superman—if he’d just moved, was running on no sleep, spent days unpacking boxes, battled dust-fueled allergies, and powered through a full day of birthday fun without a single nap.
I may not be bleeding like Superman does in the opening scene, but my congestion’s almost as gross. But unlike the Man of Steel, I don’t recover in seconds. So today, I’m doing the very un-heroic thing: I’m going to take it easy. Easier than easy, in fact.
Rest and recovery are my mission. No cape—or red underwear—required.
With one week left before I have to be fully out of my old place, let’s just say this move has officially kicked my butt. So I’m reminding myself (and maybe you too?) that it’s okay—essential, even—to pause. To breathe. To soak in some metaphorical sunshine and just be.
We don’t always have to save the world.
Sometimes we just need to save our energy.
As for the movie? If you’re craving some good, clean fun with a nostalgic, retro vibe, the new Superman might be just what the (movie) doctor ordered. It’s charming, hopeful, and refreshingly earnest—which honestly feels like a superpower these days.
Also, David Corenswet? One of the most handsome men I’ve ever laid eyes on. Period.
So here’s to rest days and knowing when to hang up the cape for a minute.
Thank you for being a friend!
