Last night, I revisited Pasadena’s one and only gay bar, The Boulevard, for the first time in almost a decade.
Founded in 1979, The Boulevard reminds me of the gay bars I frequented as a baby gay back in Texas in the mid-’90s. Last night felt like stepping into a time capsule—only this bar had a fresher soundtrack and a more eclectic mix of people.
The Boulevard is small but mighty, fun and funky. Think your favorite thrift store…with a dance floor and a full bar. The crowd was friendly, the bartenders were scruffy in all the right ways, and the energy was electric without trying too hard.
Sure, the drinks aren’t as cheap as they once were—but what is these days?
The drag queens, on the other hand, made cheap look good, lip-syncing for their lives (and their wardrobe and wig habits). No tea, no shade—I love me some queens who work hard for their money. And these gurrrls WERRRKED, hunties!
With so many gay bars disappearing, it felt good to support a local LGBTQ-owned small business. It was a joy to be able to tip the performers and bartenders alike.
Between sets, I chatted with a few regulars—some new, some familiar, all fabulous.
The vibe was pure community: gay, lesbian, bi, trans, and straight folk laughing, flirting, cheering, and just having a good time.
There were enough pretty boys and girls to fill a music video, and the kind of diversity that would make United Colors of Benetton circa 1995 proud.
Walking out around midnight, I felt that familiar glow you only get from a night spent among your tribe—where the music’s loud, the laughter’s louder, and the love feels effortless.
The Boulevard may not have changed much over the years, but maybe that’s exactly the point. In a world that’s constantly shifting, it’s comforting to know there’s still a place where you can walk in, order a drink, and feel like you’ve come home.
Keep calm and karaoke on!
